International Foundation for Science Research Grants for Developing Countries

International Foundation for Science- IFS is a research council with international operations and the mission to build the scientific capacity of developing countries in sciences related to the sustainable management of biological and water resources.
IFS believe that the interests of both science and development are best served by promoting and nurturing the research efforts of promising young science graduates, who have the potential to become leading scientists in their countries.

Application for IFS
Research Grants

Applications for IFS
Research Grants are welcome from young scientists in developing countries to do research on the sustainable management, use or conservation of biological or water resources. This broad statement covers natural science and social science research on agriculture, soils, animal production, food science, forestry, agroforestry, aquatic resources, natural products, water resources, etc.

Applications are accepted every year and are to be made on an IFS Application Form.

Eligibility Criteria
Who is eligible to apply?

An eligible candidate for an IFS Research grant is
a citizen of a developing country
a scientist with at least a Master's or equivalent degree/research experience
under 40 years of age and at the beginning of research career
attached to a university, national research institution or a research-oriented NGO in a developing country

Researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa are eligible for IFS support up to the age of 45, provided they have completed their highest academic degree (MSc, MA, PhD or equivalent) in the previous 5 years.

Eligible African countries list

Which countries qualify?
IFS Research grants are reserved for developing country scientists for research projects carried out in a developing country.
Country eligibility is based on the GNI per capita (GNI = Gross National Income) of the country, as published annually by World Bank. The upper limit is drawn at the average GNI/capita for so-called Upper Middle Income Countries (UMIC). If a country's GNI/capita increases and exceeds this upper limit for some consecutive years, the country will be phased out of the IFS granting programme.
Due to the improved economic situation in Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay, these countries are no longer eligible for IFS grants.

Submission of your application
A researcher may only submit one application at a time for consideration by IFS.

Notification of IFS Decision
To allow time for comprehensive evaluation process, notification of the granting decision for applications that arrive at the Secretariat between January and June is made during January-February of the following year; notification of the granting decision for applications that arrive at the Secretariat between July and December is made during July-August of the following year.

The IFS Application Form
