English Language Qualification Tests in Nigeria -- TOEFL IELTS and Cambridge ESOL

Most universities you are likely to apply as an international Student, are available for students with efficiency in English Language as a classroom and coursework communication. To be accepted for admission, applicants are expected to take an internationally recognised English Language Test and score a specific minimum grade. The most commonly accepted is the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and The University of Cambridge ESOL Examination. These tests can be taken either computer -or classroom- based.
The higher degree you pursue the higher the score on the English Test required.

TOEFL IELTS & Cambridge ESOL In Nigeria

Either of these English Language Tests is Obtainable in Nigeria, and is accepted in most English-Speaking Institutions around the world.

TOEFL

The TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 7,500 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries. Wherever you want to study, the TOEFL test can help you get there.

The TOEFL test is offered in two formats:
the Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) or the Paper-based Test (TOEFL PBT).
The format you take depends on the location of your test center. TOEFL iBT is offered 30–40 times a year at more than 4,500 authorized test centers throughout the world. Most test takers take the internet-based test.
TOEFL PBT is offered six times a year in areas where Internet-based testing is not available.

Possible Required Scores
For Undergraduate Study: TOEFL at least 550 (some colleges still accept TOEFL of 500)
For Master Degree: TOEFL at least 560 in addition to GRE.
For PhD: TOEFL at least 650 (some universities still accept TOEFL of 625) in addition to GRE.

University of Cambridge ESOL examinations

University of Cambridge ESOL examinations is a world language assessment provider. It provides exams in English language for over 3 million people every year, in more than 130 countries as well as a range of qualifications for language teachers. Around the world, thousands of universities, employers and government ministries rely on Cambridge ESOL certificates as proof of English language ability. A Cambridge ESOL certificate can determine whether the career is progressed or a university place offered, while the broader examination results can help to determine a nation’s education and investment policy. UCAS awards Tariff Points to students with high scores in the exam, making the students admission acceptance almost inevitable. The Cambridge ESOL certificate is the only English proficiency exam with this accreditation from UCAS (announced in June 2010)

IELTS in NIGERIA to Study Abroad

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is a world
English test for English learners of all levels. Taking an IELTS qualification Test will help open doors to international
education and employment all over the globe.

How to register

OPTION 1
Register online by visiting here https://examinations.britishcouncil.org/
OPTION 2
Complete the application form in person at your nearest
British
Council office
on a first
come first served basis. You can register at any of the offices
(Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt or Kano) and the exam is administered in
pre-determined locations across the country.
You will need to bring along
with you two current passport sized photographs, a valid international
passport, original only, no other form of ID is acceptable and a
photocopy of the information page(s) of your international passport.

Application forms may not be taken away from the British Council
office, and candidates must sign their application form in person.
Signing on behalf of a candidate will lead to automatic disqualification.

What are the costs?
According to the information provided at the British Council website,
the IELTS Exam cost as follows;
Booking for the IELTS Exam only
NGN 30,000
Ordering the specimen pack only N4,000
Booking for the workshop only N6,000
Receiving your results by mail N1,000
If you need to request extra
copies of your results (from
one month to two years
after your exam) you will be asked to fill out an IELTS
application and pay a mailing charge of N 2,000.

How do I pay?

Payments can only be
made to the British Council in form of bank draft.

When can I write my exam?

When will I get my results?

You may collect your results in person or send someone to collect your
results 13 days after the main exam date. You must go along with your
passport and an authorisation letter however.
Your results will be available at the Lagos Centre but you can also
arrange for your results to be collected from the Abuja, Kano or Port
Harcourt Centres if you submit a request. Note that the British
Council do not automatically mail the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF),
and if you wish to receive your results by mail, you can apply through
the reception of the British Council and pay the relevant fee.

Candidates will receive only one original Test Report Form. This is a
valuable document and due
care needs to be taken to keep it safe. The form cannot be replaced,
photocopied or verified at any point in time.

Exam results will be sent
directly to universities/institutions or immigration authorities
according to the addresses supplied by you on your IELTS Exam
application form.

Each receiving university/ organisation or immigration authority
specify their own requirements, so in each case you will need to check
the required IELTS score
yourself.
The IELTS Exam result is valid for two years only.
Universities/organisations may have their own rules regarding the
period of validity, so you need to check in each case. In the case of
an address change,
please contact British Council immediately. Your identity needs to be
verified by your original
international passport.
In addition to the certificate
given to the candidate,
candidates can request on their application forms, that up to 5 copies
of the results be sent to receiving institutions.

What will happen before the Exam?

Candidates will receive
notification/ confirmation either by e-mail, sms or telephone one week
before the exam date at the latest. You will need to check your e-mail
regularly before your chosen exam date! If you have not received
confirmation one week before the expected exam date, please contact
the
British Council office where you registered. Exam dates can be
deferred or transferred five weeks prior to exam date under the
following circumstances: serious illness, bereavement,
hardship/trauma, and military service.

How do I prepare for the exam?

You can prepare for your exam in two ways:
1. You can familiarise yourself with the IELTS Exam by purchasing the
specimen pack which contains a sample exam
and a listening CD.
2 Attend a one-day IELTS
information workshops in Lagos.
These workshops will be
facilitated by experienced IELTS Trainers. Numbers are limited so they
are on a first come first served basis.

What should I take to the exam?

Proof of your identity
(international passport) which is the same as the identity information
you provided on your application form.
