University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business offers MBA scholarship for African students in Africa- 2012

The Bertha Scholarship is a competitive scholarship for the full time MBA at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business for those candidates who are working on market-based and business solutions to social and environmental challenges in emerging markets, and in particular in Africa.
The Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship provides full scholarships to cover tuition fees for up to five students every year for the MBA programme at the GSB. The scholarships have been established to reduce the financial burden of undertaking a MBA for those dedicated to working in or starting entrepreneurial ventures that tackle social or environmental problems.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), as part of its programme to support member States, is partnering with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to promote leadership development through a practical and on-the-job fellowship. The programme is aimed at enabling young African professionals to develop leadership capacity in a large institution, gain knowledge of the functioning of the United Nations, have better understanding of Africa's socio-economic challenges and contribute to the analytical, advocacy and policy advisory work of the Commission. Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 months.

2011 South Africa scholarship programme Canon Collins Trust

Canon Collins Trust will award postgraduate scholarships for southern African Students to study in South Africa in 2011. All scholarships are for postgraduate study for one academic year. Renewal of scholarships will be considered for subsequent years of study (provided that students meet reporting requirements and receive satisfactory academic reports) up to a maximum of one year for Honours, two years for Masters and three years for PhD. Canon Collins Trust scholarships are not full scholarships and the value can vary from R10,000 to R35,000 a year dependent on need, level and available funds. The only full scholarships that the Trust offers for study in South Africa are for women of rural origin under the Graça Machel scholarship scheme. This must be applied for separately on a different form.

ELIGIBLE Countries
Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to women and men from the following southern African countries, or with official refugee status in one of these countries.
Angola Botswana Lesotho Malawi Mozambique
Namibia South Africa Swaziland Zambia Zimbabwe
The program aim for gender equality and welcome applications from women and from those studying unusual subjects. The scholarship program welcome applications from Angola and Mozambique which are currently underrepresented amongst previous scholars.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
All applicants must be committed to:
* The development of southern Africa
* Using the knowledge, training and skills gained through the scholarship for the general benefit of their home community and country

FIELD of STUDY:
Applications for all subject areas will be considered but the applicant must demonstrate how studying this subject will contribute to the development of southern Africa.

HOST Universities:
Applicants are expected to apply independently to universities. Applications will be considered from students part way through their course but will not cover debt from previous years.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
The application form is of primary importance as assessment is made on the basis of a completed Canon Collins Trust application form. A great deal of care must be taken in completing the form especially the motivation section. The following documents must be sent with all applications:
* Certified copy of university academic transcript
* One passport size photo with the applicant's name clearly written on the back
* Two references in sealed envelopes (two academic or 1 academic and one employer reference)
* Copies of 2 payslips (if employed)
* For PhD candidates a copy of their accepted PhD proposal

Please note that the scholarship provider will not assess applications that have documents missing so DO NOT submit your form until you have all the necessary information.

DEADLINE
The deadline for applications is August 11th 2010 - late applications will not be considered.

REFERENCES
You should ask your referees to provide you with a reference that relates to your application for this scholarship. It should outline your strengths as an applicant, demonstrate your capacity to study at the level required, and identify your potential impact in the future. In the case of an employment reference, please be aware that confirmation of employment is not sufficient as a reference. Information regarding your work performance and potential is required.
If you are not currently employed, a reference from voluntary work, or two academic references will be accepted.

Application checklist
1. Have you answered all the questions carefully? Have you clearly demonstrated why the Trust should fund you rather than any other applicants?
2. Remember to include all of the required paperwork.
3. Is the application form clear and easy to read?
4. Do not include any additional information (including CVs) as it will be discarded. Your application will be judged by the quality of the information on the application form.

African Development Journalism Fellowships

The International Center for Journalists will post Knight International Journalism Fellows in four key African countries, where they will lead projects in partnership with influential local media and journalism organizations aimed at improved coverage of poverty and development issues.
The fellowships are funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Project countries are Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania and Malawi.
The project aims to promote better development policy decision-making in key African countries by providing in-depth coverage of development issues, especially outside the capitals.
Each Fellow will spend one year training and mentoring journalists to produce penetrating coverage of development issues such as agriculture, microfinance, sanitation, health and education.
They also will fund in-depth reporting trips outside the capitals for journalists from major media and will establish networks of citizen-journalist stringers who will use mobile phones to relay information on development issues at the village level.
The project also aims to improve business-management practices to make development journalism sustainable.
Candidates must be fluent in the language of the region where they are deployed and should have at least 10 years' experience in journalism or related fields such as media-business management.
Fellowships are open to any nationality for assignments of up to a year.
Applications are currently being accepted for the program.
